What a day to be British

Today’s going to be great. The British Grand Prix’s about to start, and it’s the Wimbledon Men’s singles final. Lewis Hamilton’s on Pole Position, Andy Murray’s going for a second title, Heather Watson’s in the Mixed Doubles final, and of course Froome’s nabbed the yellow jersey with a mesmerising descent yesterday. I was scared witless just watching it…

Anyway, Wimbledon finals day means strawberries, and call me biased but Staffordshire strawberries are the BEST strawberries! So here’s a little recipie for how I prepare mine.

You will need:

  • A load of Staffordshire strawberries
  • White sugar
  • A lemon
  • Double cream

First take the leafy tops off the strawberries and rinse them. Then chop them down the middle. Medium-sized strawberries get cut into quarters, small ones in to halves, big ones into sixths or even eighths if you find a real whopper. You want as much surface area as possible. Sprinkle over the sugar (be generous), then drizzle over the lemon juice and give them a good shake. Now put the strawberries away for an hour or two. They need time for the acid and sugar to react with the strawberries.

Serve with double cream and a little more sugar if you like. You can use single cream but it doesn’t stick to the strawberries as well. The final ingredient to make them extra tasty is a British winner at Wimbledon!
